ETBA members W.H. Stanaland, David Tracey and Marcia Nelson and Dawn Parish of   SFA also participated in the construction of the hive.  Texas Eastman Corp. funded the project as part of their ongoing commitment to help preserve Texas' natural resources and educate our youth.  Stephen F. Austin graciously provided the building site near their renowned Arbortum.

These entrances are situated so that the bees can come and go without interfering with the visitors who are observing from the other side of this wall.

Panels containing educational posters swing out to reveal the frames of honey bees - safely behind glass!  When not being viewed these panels are closed to provide insulation for the hive.

Newly installed bees occupy the bottom two "brood" frames and can expand onto the four upper "super" frames.  Educational information is provided in the glass panel.

"The Man" to Thank

The late Mr.Win Day poses in front of the completed hive.   Mr. Day was instrumental in bringing this project to the Nacogdoches SFA campus.   He was "The Man" on this project, donating many hours of his time talking, planning and co-ordinating with SFA Officials, Texas Eastman Officials, ETBA Members and Nacogdoches area residents. Mr. Day also served as the photographer on the project.

He continued to serve in maintaining the observation hive, educating the public, children in particular, about his beloved honey bees until his death in April 2003.

He was a founder of the Piney Woods Beekeepers Association which meets in Lufkin, Tx.
